- The correct title of this article should be /dev/null. However, it is inaccurate due to technical reasons.
/dev/null produces no output. /dev/zero produces a continuous stream of NULL (zero value) bytes. You can see the difference by executing cat /dev/null and cat /dev/zero. Try cat /dev/null file and you will find an empty file. The null device is also a favorite subject of technical jokes, such as warning users that the system's /dev/null is already 98% full. The April Fool's, 1995 issue of the German magazine c't reported on an enhanced /dev/null chip that would efficiently dispose of the incoming data by converting it to a flicker on an internal glowing LED.

It has a single inventory slot, which can be accessed through sneak-using it when not targeting anything. The item inserted is the 'filter' item. Once the stack in that slot is full, all exact items will be immediately discarded on pick-up.
If the /dev/null has a block in its slot, it can be used to place the block.
